Visse kjøretøy har kun krav om ett. Konsekvensen av ikke forskriftsmessig bruk av kjennemerker kan være et gebyr på 3000 kroner og/eller visning for Statens vegvesen. Et kjennemerke er kjøretøyets unike identifikasjon og et helt grunnleggende virkemiddel i trafikken.
