Du kan sende inn debattinnlegg til debatt@dagsavisen.no.\n\nDebatten om dødshjelp har [den siste tiden vært preget av sterke enkelthistorier](https://www.nrk.no/trondelag/xl/dodshjelp_-maria-vil-selv-bestemme-nar-hun-skal-do-1.17484446) hvor flere [unge og alvorlig syke mennesker](https://www.aftenposten.no/amagasinet/i/KMO1P6/rikke-whelan-de-lange-er-doed-dette-er-historien-om-maanedene-hun-ville-unngaa) har blitt fulgt tett i [sitt ønske om legalisering](https://www.aftenposten.no/meninger/debatt/i/eMnmAa/appell-av-rikke-de-lange-om-selvbestemt-doedshjelp-det-er-mitt-liv-hvorfor-faar-jeg-ikke-ogsaa-eie-min-doed).\n\nHistoriene berører oss, men de gir også et snevert bilde som tilslører dette spørsmålets reelle kompleksitet.\n\nSom sykepleiere i palliasjon har vi en forståelse av pasientens lidelse, men diskusjonen må løftes fra individnivå til et samfunnsperspektiv. Det handler om enkeltmennesker, men samtidig også om fellesskapet.\n\nDet vil alltid finnes enkeltskjebner som kan brukes som argument for legalisering, men den store utfordringen er at en regulering må gjelde for alle.\n\nHvem skal omfattes? Hvem skal vurdere? Hva med psykisk sykdom, barn, personer med demens eller utviklingshemming?\n\nDet kan virke enkelt å si at unge med alvorlig kreftsykdom skal få avslutte livet når de selv ønsker det. Forekomsten av depresjon hos pasienter med avansert kreftsykdom er imidlertid høy, og vi vet at den ofte er underbehandlet.\n\nDet betyr ikke at alle som ønsker dødshjelp er deprimerte, men det avspeiler vanskeligheten ved å ta slike valg i grenselandet mellom psykisk og fysisk uhelse. I verste fall risikerer vi å innvilge dødshjelp til personer som i stedet burde fått fullgod lindring av depresjon.\n\nHvis vi åpner for dødshjelp, hva sier det da om hvilke liv vi anser som verdige? Hva med mennesker som lever med omfattende hjelpebehov hele livet? Skal vi signalisere at deres liv er mindre verdt?\n\nVi trenger en debatt som handler om mer enn retten til å dø. Den må handle om retten til å leve, også når livet er sårbart. Et samfunn hvor det ikke oppleves som uverdig å trenge hjelp til stell.\n\nVi må tenke igjennom hvordan vi kan skape rom, forståelse og trygghet, slik at vi kan vite at hjelpen er der når alvorlig sykdom rammer.\n\nVerdighet handler ikke om en frisk kropp, men om relasjoner og tilhørighet. Denne verdien er det enklere å få øye på når man har opplevelse av et fellesskap rundt seg. Det er dette vi må bygge før vi åpner for en løsning som kan endre samfunnets syn på livets verdi.",

Forekomsten av depresjon hos pasienter\nmed avansert kreftsykdom er imidlertid høy, og vi vet at den ofte er\nunderbehandlet.</p><p>Det betyr ikke at alle som ønsker dødshjelp er deprimerte,\nmen det avspeiler vanskeligheten ved å ta slike valg i grenselandet mellom\npsykisk og fysisk uhelse. Skal vi signalisere at deres liv er mindre verdt?</p><p>Vi trenger en debatt som handler om mer enn retten til å dø.\nDen må handle om retten til å leve, også når livet er sårbart.
